Catholic Identity

Catholic Identity

Inspired by Faith. Guided by the Josephite Tradition.

At MacKillop College, our Catholic identity is the foundation of who we are and how we live, learn and grow together. Inspired by the life and example of Saint Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint, we are a faith-filled learning community committed to nurturing young people who are compassionate, resilient, hopeful and prepared to make a positive contribution to the world.

As a Catholic school in the Josephite tradition, we seek to live the values that guided Mary MacKillop throughout her life: faith, courage, humility, service and a deep commitment to justice. Her belief to “never see a need without doing something about it” continues to inspire our students and staff to respond to the needs of others with generosity, kindness and practical action.

Faith is woven throughout every aspect of College life. Through Religious Education, prayer, liturgical celebrations, retreats, reflection days and opportunities for service, students are encouraged to deepen their relationship with God, develop a strong sense of purpose and explore how faith can guide their everyday lives.

We are proud of our strong connection to the Sisters of Saint Joseph, whose presence in Werribee dates back to 1910. Their enduring legacy of service, education and care for others continues to shape our culture and mission today. Alongside the example of Saint Mary MacKillop, we also draw inspiration from Saint Joseph, whose life of faith, integrity and quiet strength remains a model for our community.

At MacKillop College, Catholic identity is not confined to classrooms, prayer services or special occasions. It is reflected in the way we welcome one another, celebrate diversity, care for those in need and work together for the common good. We strive to create an inclusive and respectful environment where every person is known, valued and encouraged to flourish.

Grounded in Gospel values and inspired by our rich heritage, we are committed to forming young people who lead with compassion, act with integrity and approach the future with confidence, faith and hope.

Our Heritage

MacKillop College takes its name from Saint Mary MacKillop of the Cross, co-founder of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Her vision was simple yet profound: to provide education and care for those most in need, particularly in rural and disadvantaged communities. More than 150 years later, her spirit continues to inspire our mission and our commitment to educational excellence, service and faith-filled leadership.

Since the College opened in 1970, the Josephite tradition has remained at the heart of our community, shaping generations of students to live lives of purpose, service and hope. Today, we honour that heritage while preparing our students to meet the opportunities and challenges of an ever-changing world with confidence, compassion and a commitment to making a difference.
